In-Plant Mold Making

SIMALEX has its own complete in-house Mold Making facility. After a part and the tooling to produce it have been designed, the mold-maker is given all the information necessary to build the mold. Together with his supervisor he plans it from start to finish. In most cases he will do the complete job himself. This includes building the mold base, cutting pockets for the cavity inserts, fitting the cavity inserts, cutting the cavities, building the ejector and gating systems and polishing the cavities. After completion he will oversee the test casting process and do a First Article Inspection to make sure the die cast part meets all customer specifications. The test casting is then forwarded to the customer for Final Inspection and Test.

Key Benefits

To ensure that our molds are able to produce a high number of parts, top quality steels are used. All cavity inserts are made of Premium Quality H-13, or DieVar.

Before we put the mold into production, these inserts are heat treated to a hardness of 44-46 Rockwell C for H-13 and 46-48 Rockwell C for DieVar. The heat treatment is done in a well equipped, local heat treat shop.

Capabilities

In the SIMALEX Mold Making facility, Hermle CNC milling machines are directly linked to our Mastercam CAM system. Most of the cavity work is done on these high quality European built machines. Not only do they accept programming from our CAM system, they also have a powerful parameter programming language built into the Heidenhain control system so they can be programmed for complex contours right at the machine.

Other equipment in the shop includes a large bed type milling machine used to prepare mold bases and to do some "roughing out" of large cavities., three smaller mills and two lathes used for insert preparation and two surface grinders to do finishing work. If "Electrical Discharge Machining" (EDM) is required, we send the work to a local shop specializing in this type of machining. Cutter grinders, drill presses and various other smaller equipment complete the tools needed to produce high quality molds.

As in all services offered by SIMALEX, the aim of the mold shop is to maintain the company reputation as a reliable supplier of quality die cast products. To do this it is necessary to have reliable, high quality molds.
