Aluminum die cast vent fan housing frame for a heater used in US Army Tactical Vehicles.
New Component: Other manufacturing processes were evaluated,
specifically investment casting, but die casting was able to demonstrate a piece-part
saving of 30% over the closest alternative. The use of aluminum alloy plus thin-wall die
casting was able to keep weight to a minimum. Design & Production
Considerations: A smooth surface finish was critical for this part in order to
eliminate or reduce any air flow turbulence. Die design and process control enabled
casting the impeller fins without trace insert lines on their surfaces. Machining:
Drilling and tapping. Finishing: Chromate coating.
